The Low Watts, another upstart in the crowded Tempe (Ariz.) music scene, rose from the remnants of several other local bands. Jesse formerly played guitar for the Gin Blossoms. Darryl played bass for Poets Corner and Major Lingo, and has been working with Jesse on the Low Watts' material for several years.

Unfortunately, the band lost two of its founding members. Scott Johnson (also a former Blossoms) and Darryl started playing with The Peacemakers (with Roger Clyne and P.H. Naffah of the The Refreshments) while the Low Watts were on hiatus, and Scott has decided to stay with that band. Original drummer Winston Watson left the Low Watts last year.

The band had been playing quite frequently in Tempe before Winston left, and also played a series of shows at Long Wongs earlier this year as a trio, borrowing Pistoleros drummer Gary Smith. Jesse recently moved to Los Angeles, which has put a crimp in the band's gigging plans.

The Low Watts have been collaborating with Marshall Crenshaw and Stevie Nicks, and started serious work in the studio for their debut record after signing with A&M in July '98. Unfortunately, A&M was recently acquired by Universal Studios Inc. as part of a record company merger, and most new projects have been put on hold. So there are no concrete plans for a Low Watts album anytime soon. But you can hear the band on the Christmas To Remember compilation CD -- they contributed a song called "Christmas Time," that also featured former Gin Blossoms drummer Phillip Rhodes.

Jesse has also been working with numerous other artists on their projects, including country singer Kelly Willis, and The Rembrandts. "Long Walk Back," the first single from The Rembrandts' new album, "Spin This," was co-written by Jesse. Follow the links for more info and sound clips.
