A STORY I WAS TOLD
(Doug Hopkins)
(The one and only single put out by the Psalms, released in 1983 on Reilly Records.)
They watched my dreams turn into plans
and sent them shrinking back again
"A time for everything," they said;
"You cant tempt fate to get ahead."
A word to keep all things on cue;
A chance to say, but not to do.
A time, a penance, and a name;
Its a standard no one can live for.
Theres always someone better.
I dont come close
To a story I was told.
A story handed down to us,
And we can never measure up.
It praises things that just arent there,
And yet they tell it everywhere.
A promise made, but never kept;
The one they break without regret.
The myth defeats us all, and then
They send you back to try again.
The story I was told
Never seems to change.
I can never win
And it can never age.
Its a standard no one can live for.
Theres always someone better.
I dont come close
To a story I was told.
